Your overall health can be affected by wisdom teeth problems and it can also damage your entire mouth. Though most people do not have room in their mouths to accommodate wisdom teeth, those that grow into place into place fully and are properly aligned may not cause problems. The teeth may not fully erupt or they may be growing in the wrong direction when this is the case.
Early diagnosis and removal of the wisdom teeth, before problems arise is the best scenario. While they are still easy to remove, regular dental exams with X-rays can reveal the presence of wisdom teeth before they start to cause problems. Removal of wisdom teeth should be done, ideally, between the ages of 14 and 24.As you grow older the roots develop further and the bone surrounding them becomes denser. Progressive problems with your oral health can occur as the teeth develop.
People with impacted wisdom teeth will commonly seek treatment when the complications have caused pain and other problems. At the heart of your other dental problems, you may not be aware, is your wisdom teeth problems.
The primary tool for diagnosing wisdom tooth problems is dental X-rays. They will detect the presence of wisdom teeth as well as their location and alignment. An experienced oral surgeon can make a more in-depth diagnosis regarding the severity of the problem, how extraction must be approached, and what you can expect during recovery.
Advanced wisdom teeth problems may require treatment beyond extracting the problematic teeth. Your oral surgeon may have you take a round of antibiotics to clear up the infection prior to surgery, if infection is already present. Removal of cysts and tumors may need to be done. If it has developed, gum disease will have to be dealt with.
When the body is under stress such as final exam, moving to new location, and pregnancy, is when the wisdom teeth will usually cause trouble.
The best time for the surgical removal of the wisdom teeth is when they are about 2/3 of the fully developed sizes. This is typically at the ages of late teens or early twenties. There are currently two common practices for surgical removal of the wisdom teeth.

The most common recommendation is to remove all four under intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. Alternatively, you can unilaterally extract one side (upper and lower wisdom teeth), two at a time, 3-6 months apart, under local anesthesia.
Wisdom teeth surgery, as with any surgery, has risks associated with it. The nerve within the lower jaw may be injured during removal of the impacted wisdom tooth if it had developed in close proximity. When this happens, it may manifest as temporary numbness or tingling of the lower lip, chin or tongue. This numbness ends up being permanent on very rare occasions.
How long should you have pain after dental extractions?
Hi
Can anyone help? I had four teeth extracted 4 days ago, and a denture put in at the same time. Since the injections wearing off I have had throbbing pain extending into ear ache. I am managing to control this during the day with paracetamol, but it is keeping me awake at night. There is a small swelling at one of the injection sites and it is very painful to put the denture in (but necessary)! Does anyone know if this is normal after tooth extraction.
Thanks for any help.
Yest it is normal. The denture rubs against the sore gums but you MUST keep it in. The gums are bruised and take a while to heal. You should be taking Ibuprofen or Nurofen which are anti inflamatories as well as paracetamol. Take out the denture 3 times a day and rinse your mouth with warm salty water. I have had this done myself so know how it feels. I was also a Dental Nurse and have seen it all before. If you are still in a lot of pain by the end of next week contact your Dentist, but you should be more comfortable by then.
