Craniosynostosis: A Brief Introduction
It is human nature to frown at something that is deemed as abnormal. Not excluded from that are parents with children having congenital defects. An abnormal condition present at birth is Craniocynostosis. An irregularly shaped head is a characteristic due to early closure of one or more sutures. As part of the normal growth and development, the brain increases in size and it is expected to be tripled by the 36th month. The sutures help the skull to expand so it can cope up with the growth of the brain. Craniocynostosis happens when the sutures close earlier than expected. It has no known cause but it is said that genetics and exposure to teratogens such as drugs can lead to the development of the defect. Some studies show that this is considered as a birth defect caused by Zoloft, a type of anti-depressant under the SSRI classification.
Does my Child have Craniocynostosis?
The obvious sign is an unusual shape of the head. Palpitation of the head will reveal that there is no fontanel or that “soft spot” and/or the fontanels disappeared early. You might notice that there is slow or no increase of your baby’s head as time progressed and also, a raised ridge can be found on the affected sutures. The signs will not immediately show at birth but will be seen later in life. You should immediately see your doctor if you can see that your baby’s head has an unusual shape or isn’t growing as it should be.
Is There a Treatment for This Condition?
Minimal Craniosynostosis doesn’t necessitate a management since it will not have a major effect on the baby’s health and will be covered with hair once developed. For major cases however, surgery is necessary. The procedure is done when the child is still an infant but timing and type will depend on the severity and if there is an underlying condition. The goal of the surgery is to decrease the brain’s internal pressure and provide enough space for the brain to develop properly. The surgeons performing the operation specializes in brain surgeries as well as face and head surgeries. This can make the parents rather emotional and anxious so it is best that they’ll have a support system with similar experiences. It is highly encouraged to ask your doctor if they know any support group in the community.
