Root Canal treatment
Root Canal treatment could be defined as a Dental procedure which helps in removing the internal parts of the tooth, essentially the pulp chamber of the tooth. A root canal is a naturally occurring space within a tooth that comprises the pulp chamber, the main canals, and highly intricate anatomical branches that connect the root canals to each other or to the surface of the root.
The root canal treatment or root canal therapy involves the removal of the nervous elements of the tooth which have either been infected or decayed due to microbial action or any physical pressure. The treatment involves the filling of the empty cavity with a bio-compatible material.
How does Root canal treatment work?
First of all, the Dentist/Endodontist diagnoses a patient and advises him/her of the proper treatment if the Root canal is decayed. He then isolates the tooth area with the help of a rubber dam kit. The rubber dam kit is a rubber sheet fitted with clamps or clips and it is placed around the tooth which is to be treated. This isolation enables the dentist to operate smoothly and prevents the mixing of fluids from the motor and the saliva in the mouth. The dentist then prepares a cavity using an aerator. Then the root is entirely cleaned using root canal files. These root canal files go on increasing in thickness as they enter the root and help in the removal of the pulp of the tooth. The dentist would complete this entire procedure in a single seating or else, seal the cavity with a soothing medicine or a temporary filling material for a week until the next seating is called for. In the final stage, the root canal is filled with some bio-compatible plastic material followed by aesthetic regular cement filling which could be sometimes accompanied with crown placement.
Root canal treatment is advised if there is:
- Severe toothache during chewing or during contact with extreme hot or cold temperature.
- Constant pain in the tooth during chewing food & darkening of the tooth
- Swelling is visible in the regions of gums around the teeth

The Truth About A Root Canal Treatment
A root canal treatment is one of the dental services that most people are afraid of. Knowing that you’ll get the pulp/root of the tooth (with nerves inside) removed can be quite terrifying. But if the dentist decides on giving the treatment you ought to be happy because that means your tooth need not be extracted. And with modernized dental procedures, the treatment is no longer painful; especially because the affected tooth will be number before proceeding to anything else. There’s also minimal discomfort post treatment, and it’s not as bad as when you have a tooth pulled. Also, it costs less than if you have a tooth pulled out and replaced by a denture or a dental implant.
A root canal treatment has three purposes. The first two purposes are to stop the tooth from aching, and to prevent the bacteria from spreading. The toothache is caused by bacteria-filled tooth decay that has already gone into the pulp. The pulps swells and gets infected. And since the pulp is composed of nerves and blood vessels, there’s sure to be much pain and sensitivity on the affected tooth. There is also likely to be abscess found at the root tip of the pulp causing some swelling around the gum area. So the tooth decay and pulp will be removed and the canal will be cleaned. Dental files will be used to removed the pulp, then the canal will be properly shaped.
The last purpose of a root canal treatment is to save the tooth and avoid replacement. So after the pulp extraction and canal shaping, a pink rubbery material called gutta percha is put in place of the pulp. After the gutta percha, tooth filling is applied to cover the crown. There are also times when the tooth decay treatment causes the tooth to crack. It may be because the decay was so grave that a part of the tooth came off from cleaning. In cases like this, a dentist may place a porcelain crown to restore the tooth and make it look totally normal once again.
Will a darkened tooth (after injury) ever get white again without root canal treatment?
Tooth was sensible but fine until days ago when it turned dark overnight ten days after the accident. A Any chance I can escape root canal treatment? If not, should I wait until my post concussion syndrome is gone or do I have to run and get it done asap? Any alternatives to the treatment?
No it will only get darker.
You will need a root canal with or without internal bleaching (bleaching from the inside of the tooth out) to treat this discolourment.
Bridges, implants etc that the other person mentioned only apply if you get the discoloured tooth extracted. Enquire about a veneer
