The Knowledge Of Dental Handpiece
There are disclosed dental handpieces which comprises means at one end of the handpiece to mount a dental implement, a drive train arranged within the handpiece and extending to the implement-end in order to operate the dental equipmenta light source arranged within the handpiece, and a light guide extending from the light source to a position adjacent to the implement-end of the handpiece for directing light to a treatment region adjacent to the dental autoclave, the light guide being arranged within the handpiece and along side the drive train.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART A handpiece of the above general kind is known from German Gebrauchsmuster No. 69 40 204. In this known handpiece a fibre-optic light guide runs inside a flexible hose, which also contains media lines for water and/or air, from one supply member, which is arranged at the end of the handpiece remote from the tool, on the outside along the handpiece as far as the tool end of the handpiece. For the purpose of rendering possible a partially mutual torsion between handpiece and supply member the hose has a certain overlength. The picking-up and holding of the handpiece and also its handling in respect of the patient is made very difficult, in that the hose runs on the outside on the handpiece.
An exemplary dental handpiece is generally designated by the number 10 on the attached drawings. The present invention has application to the manufacture or fabrication of all or any portion of dental handpieces, including for example, the body 11, neck 12 or head 13 thereof. The invention has particular application to the head 13 and neck 12 portions of dental handpieces 10, because these portions often have cross section with complex profiles, as shown in FIGS. 2 - 5. For example, the neck 12 depicted in the drawings is provided with a shaped aperture 20, which is useful with a fiber optic bundle for the transmission of light. As stated above, such contoured shapes can be machined or otherwise formed in conventional handpieces, but with an increase in the time and expense involved if accurate products are to be made.
As is conventional in the dental high speed handpiece art, handpiece 10 may also be provided with internal structures such as fluid passages, exhaust ports and the like (not shown). FIG. 4 shows an example of internal structure, namely internal section 21. Again, such structures have been fabricated in the past using expensive and difficult techniques such as machining. The present dental autoclave fabricates products such as those of handpiece 10 using metal injection molding or MIM techniques. MIM is described in for example, U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,241,354 and 6,274,083, which are hereby incorporated by reference for such disclosures. MIM techniques are conventional and need not be described in detail.
Dentists have many different options for getting an expensive dental handpiece repair. If the piece is new, they can send it back to the manufacturer to get it replaced perhaps under warranty. If not under warranty, there are sometimes local options in larger cities, or national service centers. Some local options offer pickup and delivery as well. Since there are many manufacturers of these units, many offices have a supplier catalog they can get the name of a company to use. Some companies are local and will even offer pick up on the equipment. Many others, will need to be mailed out. Depending on what needs to be done, work can take from a few days to a week. To cut down on minor repair and upkeep costs, many offices buy repair kits and have an assistant learn basic repairs.
